LEARN ABOUT ROLLER SKATING

Roller skates are shoes, or frames that fit over a shoe, with four to five small wheels made for skating on a hard surface. The modern version of roller skates are inline skates. These usually have four to five wheels arranged in a single line.

Roller skating is a form of recreation and a sport. To prevent injuries safety equipment is strongly recommended, including wrist guards, knee, elbow pads, and a helmet.

LEARN HOW TO ROLLER SKATE
  • Step One - Place feet in "V" position, heels together, toes apart.
  • Step Two - Keep your body upright and don't look down.
  • Step Three - Bend your knees slightly. Arms out like an airplane's wings.
  • Step Four - March, don't walk, using small baby steps. Lift your knees, keeping your feet in the "V" position.
  • Step Five - Do not attempt to slide skates, roll will happen if your feet are properly placed.
  • Step Six - Pushing, when you are ready for it, occurs by pushing your skate out to the side, not to the back as in walking.
  • Step Seven - Falling: To fall keep your hands out in front of you, bend your knees as much as possible and sit back on your backside and thighs. Do not touch the ground with your hands if possible.. Wrist and arm injuries are the most common injuries in skating.
  • Step Eight - Backwards skating is very similar to forward, except that you keep your toes together and heels apart in an inverse "V" position.
